I came across details of this ear-flap hat pattern, by Pam Allen, in a knitting blog which linked to pattern details on Ravelry.
It's an Interweave free pattern and according to the details on Ravelry, is part of the Cover Your Ears set. But I can't find it, no matter what search terms I use. I've searched by tags as well.
If I try googling for it, I get mentions of it on blogs, but they all lead back to the default search page on Knitting Daily.
A site called docstore seems to suggest it has it but it turns out to be a media object, which doesn't load so I got out of that page as quickly as I could.
It's a gorgeous pattern. Can anyone give me some tips on how to track it down.
I'd be grateful for any help in accessing this pattern. Thank you.
Hi,
You have to sign in/or sign up for an account with Knitting Daily. Then you have to download "8 Free Knitting patterns for Kids", then there is an earflap hat pattern in that pdf file! That's as close as I have come so far.
Thank you Woodsy. I appreciate your thoughtfulness in helping me attempt to track down the Cover Your Ears set.
I'm going to keep looking for "Ryan's Hat", but if I run out of time before Christmas, I'll try to adapt one of the patterns in Knitting for Kids.
Kind regards
If you look at her website, the "Turn A Square Hat " is Ryan's hat.
Well, Stymied, now I'm stymied, too!
That multi colored, ear flap, child's hat pattern still eludes us!!!
It doesn't look like the "Ryan's Hat", but maybe I'm missing something.
This is the "Ear flap Hats" hat pattern that is in the "8 Free knitting patterns for Kids" download.
This is Ryan's Hat.
Ryan's hat by Pam Allen is in the Winter 2005 edition of Interweave Knits magazine. I don't know if it is for sale or not. Perhaps your local library has a copy of the magazine.
Zoe
It came up as a free pattern on Ravelry, so I thought I could find it on the website, not the magazine. Oh, well! We tried. Library is a good idea.
While I've been sleeping, there have been several replies so thank you everyone for taking time to do this.
Thank you AnnL. This sounds a promising lead, and I've been following it, but I can't find her website! I've also googled "turn a square" with her name. I did find a website for a Pamela Allen and had a tingly eureka moment, but it's somebody else who's skilled at fabric art, collages, quilts..
Re back numbers of Interweave Knits...I'm in the UK, and have already tried local specialist yarn retailers, but the only issues of Interweave Knits I can locate are quite recent. I know they do CDs of back numbers, but to get anything sent over from the US is expensive, and pricey, particularly if it's just for one pattern.
I've just read the email notification that there's a reply from Woodsy to this thread, giving a link to the entire hat pattern set as a Google document. For some reason this isn't showing up on the thread, but maybe it will appear soon.
Of course I could copy and paste the link in Woodsy's reply from the email that the forum sent me.
Wow, Woodsy! How did you manage this? I think I'm not bad at finding stuff, but I'd given up on this search. I do appreciate your kindness in following the chase right to the end.
A Big Thank You for tracking it down. I am in awe.
It's coming out of the printer as I type!
Have a good weekend.
Great! Happy Knitting!!! Hopefully Interweave will take pity on all who love this hat on Ravelry!
Ooh! Yes please do post the link!!!!!
I've been searching for ages too :(
Helen
I have been trying to locate this pattern as well. Would you please send me a copy?
Kind regards and happy holidays,
Julia

Hi Stymied and anyone else looking for the Ryan's Hat,
Once the copyright that someone has purchased to supply any pattern runs out, it is no longer a freebie and must be paid for. Since this hat pattern is quite a few years old, likely the "free" pattern that Interweave was able to provide, is not a free pattern anymore. The person who came up with the pattern (Pam Allen) and wrote out the instructions for it, now is to be paid for her work. This has nothing to do with Interweave Knits taking pity on anyone. They too must follow the laws and cannot do what is not legal for them to do.
To ask other knitters to send free copies is a violation of Pam Allen's inventions. It is illegal to do so. If you want the pattern, I did post as to where you would be able to get it. Interweave Knits does sell back copies in digital form of their magazines. You must pay for it.
Happy knitting, Zoe
Here is a link I found to a PDF file containing the pattern. It is not on interweave so I am not sure if it is suppose to be free any more or if this is a violation to copyrights. Get it while you can! http://yeeun.pe.kr/files/knit_Cover_Ears_hat.pdf
Happy hat knitting.
