Hi All,

Even though I have lots of other knitting - and rug hooking - on the go I do like a knit-along.  So I will give it a go.  I am using Fleece Artist Somoko (65% Marino, 20% Kid, 10% Nylon and 5% Silk.  It may be a little off gage but I will try to make it up with needle size.  It is a hand dyed yarn in dark blues, blacks and purples.  I will see how it goes.

I just had a thought (Idea (bing!) if you did wrap the yarn all the way around the needle, it will make a larger hole. I'm thinking you brought the yarn forward as if to purl, made the YO by wrapping the yarn around the needle, then did the purl stitch (yes, maybe?). If so, that was more than a Yarn Over Wink and thus a bigger gap.

I had that lightbulb moment while doing my lace swatch to check my gauge. I ended up going with a full wrap of the needle as you've described here, and what I've got is almost a gradation of hole size in my lace pattern, with a large hole at the bottom of the set of three and two smaller ones that look like Papa Bear, Mama Bear and Baby Bear in a little dance up the lace pattern. I thought of doing this row so that the hole came out the same size but I've decided I like the gradation, so I'm going to go with that, even though it's a little annoying.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who was confused by this!

Thanks to Zoe I caught my mistake soon enough....Did not have lifeline so I had to rip out stitch by stitch on needle for 5 rows...Should be all set...I had done a full wrap so was almost like 2 YOs...Everything else seems clear and working well....Will try again!!!!...Thanks again Zoe !!!!!...Linda

I don't know what made me think of this, but I looked at the cardigan picture again and decided the sideways rib front bands bother me. They look ok in the picture, although up close the picked up stitches leave gaps, then I'm thinking when I get around to that, my knitting isn't so even, and the gaps will look worse. Further, to cast off on that edge it, too, is going to look wavy. When/if I start this sweater I will make one of the fronts first, will test a vertical ribbed band and hope it doesn't distort the patterned part.

Do you have the pattern, Zoe? It is as easy as people have mentioned, but you do have to pay attention to that one YO.

Hi BessT,

I haven't gone through my back issues of the knitty magazine to see if I have it or not.  If/when I find it, I am going to do a swatch of the lace pattern.  I need to pay attention to any stitches!!!!  heha,  when I am not doing a simple knit or purl stitch!  I understand that there is no chart with this pattern, so that suits me just absolutely just fine.  If I can't find the magazine, I may just break down and buy the pattern.  It would be one I can follow.

Still at Mom's place (she is not well, so I am staying for the day).  Happy knitting, Zoe Smile

Hi Bess,

I wonder if I could spare you the big frog this may become?? (of course this may be ideal the way you want to do it!)   Is it possible to make a long swatch about 10 inches long and 8 inches wide to practice this idea on?   You could use any yarn from your stash.   It would be a waste of your time and effort if it didn't work.  Do you have your yarn yet? I can't remember and Mom's computer is a little cranky for me, so there are many frogs I take out as I go along!! heha

If I make the cardigan, I may just crochet an edge rather than knit one on??  any thoughts??   Of course the pattern must be tweeked for us to make it our own!!

Happy knitting, and still at Mom's place, Zoe Smile

Hi thorhammer,

I like your tweek!!!  it will give you another dimension to this cardigan.  Just be sure you follow it all the way through the pattern.  You will have to mark your rows to keep on track of "your" pattern.  This is exciting for you to see your own tweek work out for you!  It is like your own signature on your work!

Happy knitting, Zoe Smile

Hi Zoe. oh, I don't mind un-ravelling. I'm thinking one of the fronts is going to serve as a sample anyway, and if it works, then I'm already on the right track. I have a yarn that is suitable, if I get that far through other projects. It is Berrocco Remix - slightly more textured than should be for this pattern, but it sampled ok, to the gauge .. then again if I see a smoother yarn in the same size as the Allegoro , and maybe colour blended... ooo-eee! And on the needles already we have... (about a dozen other projects).

A crochet band is another way to go, though not me, I don't crochet (pity).

Hope your mom is better soon.

Incidentally the tension given on the Classic Elite Allegoro yarn is 6 sts/inch or 24 sts/4-inch swatch in st st. I will look for it, or a similar of the same tension... I jotted this in my shopping notes - *not* the lace pattern tension and yes I'd got up to look at a label with that in mind. Of course the label gauge is for st st.

Hi all,

I knitted my swatch (26 st X 32 rows) and even though my yarn is a little smaller than DK it came out perfect to the wavy swatch noted in the pattern (21 st and 30 rows to 4 inches (10 cm).  The results are not as structured as using the yarn they suggest (cotton/linen) so will be a little more swingy.  For the funny "hole" at row 11, I did my yo by just bringing the yarn over the needle as I would if I had made a mistake going from k to p and it gave me the same size hole.  I like the way the variegated yarn worked out.  Think it is going to be nice.  I am ready to cast on!

RE: YARNOVERS - From "The Knitters Companion" by Interweave - "yarnovers produce open increases. You'll avoid confusion if you think of them as being worked in two steps. The first is to lay the yarn from front to back over the needle The second step is to place the working yarn in front of or behind the needle in preparation for the next stitch.

If the working yarn follows a knit stitch on the right needle, bring the yarn forward under the needle, then lay it over the needle, from front to back.  If the working yarn follows a purl stitch, the yarn is already in the front and you can simply lay it over the needle, front to back. If the stitch following the yo is to be knitted, leave the working yarn in back of the needles; if the next stitch is to be purled, bring the working yarn to the front of the needles."
