Thanks Laura, for your feedback regarding my decrease question. I'm really confused because I've seen some finished pictures where it looks like its patterned all the way to the top and others that look like mine, where its mostly ribbing/stockinette from the decrease point to the top. Is it just the way the pictures are being taken (stretched vs unstretched?) or possibly that some of us are doing the k2tog and SSK stitches through the front vs tbl? I did mine normal, through the front.
I'm anticipating starting my decreases either tonight or tomorrow. If anyone else who has finished can chime in I would REALLY appreciate it!!
The question: Do you knit the k2tog and SSK through the front as usual or tbl to keep in pattern?
Side note.... brenboone, I absolutely LOVE the color of your hat!! What color is it?
Thanks to all- Dana
It's Berroco Comfort Heathers and the color is 9787 Salmonberry. It reminds me of the color of cinnamon. Soo pretty!

Hey Dana - I took a look at my hat since I have it with me and the crown of the hat does look like ribbing when it is unstretched. It's the last 7 or 8 rows where you decrease on every row (at least I think that is what is happening; I don't have the pattern with me). I did all of my k2tog and ssk decreases through the front, not tbl. You can see a pic on page 13 of the comments. I also looked at some of the projects on Ravelry and they mostly look the same so I think the decreases are through the front, not tbl. Take care - Laura

Finished my hat this afternoon. With 120 stitches using Cascade 220 Superwash on size 8 needles, the finished hat is about 18 1/2" circumference and 8" tall. It fits me quite nicely, not too tight for a change.
Regarding why it looks like ribbing at the top, there are no cables in the final 6 rounds. The last cable is in round 4 of the decrease section.
I am ready to start shaping the crown on my hat now; I just ran the lifeline through the last repeat of round 1 and I think I'm ready. I've read over the pattern and made sure I understand what I'm supposed to be doing. Here goes nothing!
Looks good Mrs Davis!! Good luck! I, too, will be starting my decreases today. Thanks to all that offered input on my questions!
I finished round 1, and actually ended with 91 stitches left. I started round 2, and noticed that the pattern starts out with the 1/1 LC using knit sts and the purls using purls, but shortly into the round, that ceased to be the case. Can someone who has finished the hat chime in and tell me if I'm doing something wrong or if this is what happens. I already went back through my rnd one stitches and made sure they're all what they're supposed to be. I don't want to go on until I'm sure this is correct.
Oh, and one more thing. . .at what round did you switch to the dpn's?
Okay. . .I already got totally "lost" in the decrease rounds. I made through the first 3 rounds okay, then I decided to switch to dpn's for round 4 and everything fell apart. SO. . .because I wasn't moving up the lifeline every round, I just frogged back to the beginning of the crown shaping. Sigh. I think before I switch to dpn's I'll make sure I have the lifeline. Maybe not on round 4 either. Maybe round 8? I dunno. I've never successfully used dpn's. I guess I'll use the lifeline and frog if I have to.
Mrs Davis... sorry to hear you're having to move back to the crown, however with all the care you've put forth so far, you want it to be perfect! Regarding your first post, I have that Rnd 2 starts with a purl stitch BEFORE the 1/1 LC. I'm not sure if you saw that or not. When I did my first hat, I switch to the dpns at round 8, that way I wasn't having to deal with the cable needle anymore while on dpns and I had 13 stitches per dpn. Rnd 6 and 7 were a little tight on the 16" circular, but I managed. Hope that helps! Good luck on x2- Dana

Yes, that is the way I started rnd 2; I just didn't say it very well. It starts out fine, but because of the p2tog, it gets out of sync. It looks all right after rnds 2 and 3 for me, so I am assuming this is normal. Before I got totally bogged down in rnd 4, I did see the pattern again. I have decided to wait until rnd 8 to switch to dpn, and use my lifeline like my life depends on it so I only have to frog back one round if I mess up, lol. And yes, I would like it to at least "look" perfect. It won't be, because I did mess up at the beginning, but it didn't affect the pattern (my first LC round, I did all LC's instead of 2 LC and 2 purls; I'm calling it a pattern variation and going with it).
Can someone help me convert this pattern to flat knitting so I can make a scarf to go with the hat? If this forum isn't the place for that, could someone email me privately to help me get started on what I need to do?
post removed
I am using a removable stitch marker to mark each set of 8, it is definitely helping me keep track of where I am even though it does slow me down a little
Wow mrs. Davis ... you're so ambitious!! I admire that. I, of course, have no clue as to how to convert that plague-y pattern to anything!
I've thrown in the towel on this hat. Frogged it yesterday and put that yarn away. I don't know why, but I just couldn't make it come out right, and when my thumb started aching from all that cable hooking I decided that that hat was just not for me!! I'm happily embarked on a more conventional cable hat that seems to be working out well. Maybe I'll join another knit along some day...
I hope all the nice people on this forum have happy knitting...
Mary
Mary.. sorry to hear the hat didn't work out for you :( Good luck on your current hat and hopefully we'll catch you on the next knit along. Perhaps something for the Holidays?? A stocking or ornaments perhaps?? :) Dana
