There must be a better way! Indeed there is. In the Winter 2010 issue of Interweave Knits, the always-inventive TECHknitter introduced us to a clever new method for bridging the gap by turning the zipper into a knitable object.

Ideas for attaching your zipper once it's been "yarnified":

-- Bind off live loops and seam the tape to the front edges of your garment;

-- Work an attached I-cord using the zipper loops and garment edge loops as a base;

-- Use a three-needle bind-off with the zipper loops and garment edge loops;

-- Pick up new stitches, pulling each through both the garment edge and a single chained loop. Bind off right away or continue to work a band or other edging.

-- Chain loops on a zipper tape first and attach as you work the garment in the manner of a knitted-on edging.

Kristeen Griffin-Grimes, known in the knit and crochet community for her pattern company, French Girl, utilizes inventive combinations of texture, color, and stitch patterns in her fashion-forward, seamless design work featured in her new book, French Girl Knits.

In this video she talks about the inspiration for the book and shares with readers photos of her travels to France.

About the Book

French Girl Knits includes:

Classy, feminine designs fashioned in luxurious yarns that achieve suberb figure-flattering fit with seamless construction-the need for sewing has been eliminated with Kristeen's one-piece designs.

Four thematic vignettes inspired by French daily life, film, and history: Enfant Sauvage (Wild Child), la Boutique Parisienne (A Vintage Dress Shop in Paris), Dans La Rue (Street Wear), and Creatrice (Creative Woman).

A design workshop featuring in-depth tutorials that teach seamless construction methods featured in French Girl Knits, providing valuable technical information for both beginning and seasoned knitters. You"ll learn how to design in a more organic way, either from the top down, from the hem up, from the back out, and by picking up live stitches when possible.

All of the designs featured in French Girl Knits are body conscious and figure flattering. Many designs include curve-friendly waist shaping, empire-waist detailing, and stitch details that emphasize the feminine form. Inspired by historical costume, Kristeen uses unique detailing such as lacing, openwork, lace edgings, and bell sleeves to further highlight the woman's silhouette.

French Girl Knits invites you to be immersed in a world filled with imagination and creativity, using knitting as a vehicle for self-express and encouraging experimentation through your medium.

This video is a behind-the-scenes on the Interweave Knits Winter 2008 shoot - check out how we captured some of the shots you’ll see in the magazine.

The cast of characters:

There’s Beth, the stylist, who pulls together outfits for each knit and stands by during shooting to keep things tucked in or hanging right, as the case may be. Beth takes my ideas on outfits for each piece and overall aesthetic for each story, and assembles textures and colors that showcase the knits and set a mood.

Katie, the makeup artist, provides a little finishing polish. We like a very natural, fresh look, but a little bit here and there can go a long way towards making the camera see the world as vibrantly as we do.

The photographer’s assistant, Nelson (you may have seen him modeling mittens in our Fall issue, too!), works some kind of magic by which he simultaneously moves equipment, holds reflectors, tests light rigs, does a thousand other things, and still keeps all of us loose and laughing.

Kate and Crystal, our lovely models, are infinitely patient and very good-humored about the strange spotlight we put them in. Kate’s a painter, and Crystal owns a music shop on Philadelphia’s South Street – they’re everyday people we know from real life, very down to earth, and they’re secretly (I think) amused by the whole thing.

Lisa, Senior Editor on Knits and Editor of knitscene, keeps everything moving. She manages the shot list, makes sure people are getting dressed or undressed on schedule, handles all the logistics of model releases and so forth, and keeps us on time.

Amanda, our photographer, and I are practically one person during the twenty hours of shooting that go into each issue. We start with the overall look and feel for each story, and eventually work our way down to specifics like the lighting, the spots for each shot, props, poses, and actions. We work together to make sure each shot showcases the interesting knitting stuff, but is visually compelling as well – we’re rarely more than a couple feet apart while we’re shooting, and while we sometimes play tug-of-war, we push each other and work hard to capture a picture of the knitting life - a look, a feel, a mood, that we think you, the readers, will be drawn into.

Enjoy!

Here is what Sandi Wiseheart said about the book:

About The Stars of Our Show!

The stars of this movie are no ordinary socks, you understand. These are 21 pairs of handknit socks, each pair knit from handpainted yarns. These socks are new, never-before-seen sock designs, from nineteen designers like Veronik Avery, Lorna Miser, Chrissy Gardiner, Ann Budd, Nancy Bush, Patricia Gibson-Roberts, Charlene Schurch...you know. All the Sock Greats.

Where can you find these beautiful sock patterns? In Knitting Socks With Handpainted Yarn, by Carol Sulcoski. Not only are there patterns, there is also a ton of great information from Carol about how to make best use of all those gorgeous handpainted yarns we all drool over in the shops. She tells us what to look for in a yarn, and how to make sure you get pretty results and not weird results like pooling or strange stripes--in any kind of project, not just in knitted socks!

Check your local yarn shop to see if they have a copy you can get your hands on right away, or order a copy online from us.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Handpainted sock yarns have captured the hearts of countless knitters. Colorful sock yarns are little gems of the knitting universe, providing hours of knitting bliss that result in a luxurious hand-crafted item. Author Carol Sulcoski, owner of Black Bunny Fibers, a popular indie fiber sock yarn source, delves into the mystery of the handpainted sock yarn and divulges its secrets, explains how to make the best of these much-loved yarns, and shows how to knit with success with 20 new patterns designed just with these yarns in mind.

Knitters struggle with handpainted yarns. How do you design projects with them versus other types of yarns? How do you avoid the pitfalls of pooling and splotching? How do you combine multicolored handpaints with other types of yarns? Knitting Socks with Handpainted Yarn is designed to provide sock knitters with technical guidance so these wonderful yarns can be used to their best advantage, explaining the differences between various kinds of handpainted yarn and showing how to avoid undesirable effects. Combining her handdyeing and knitwear designing knowledge, Carol shares techniques and tips to help every sock knitter turn out fabulous footwear. Fun, original sock patterns from a variety of contributors illustrate these techniques. The patterns will be written for widely-available handdyed yarns so that readers can get the same results, but readers will also learn to identify patterns for their unique yarns.
