Size 21" circumference and 9¼" tall, excluding earflaps

Yarn Brown Sheep Company Lanaloft Sport (100% wool; 145 yd [133 m]/50 g):

• #LL46S twist of lime, 2 skeins

Tools

• Size 5 (3.75 mm) 16" circular (cir) and set of double-pointed needles (dpn)

Twisted stitches emphasize the earflap shaping as they wend their way up the sides of a hat to give the illusion of cables.

I'm stuck on the next round after adding the second ear flap.  There are no instructions for joining the hat in the round.  Turning and knitting 12 stitches doesn't make sense.  If you turn and then k12, you will be knitting the flap you just added.  Then you start the next round?  This just doesn't make sense to me.
