The gansey is worked in the round from lower edge to the beginning of the armholes, then the front and back are worked separately to the shoulders. The shoulders are joined using the three-needle bind-off, and the neckband is worked in the round. The sleeves are picked up from the armhole openings and worked in the round down to the cuffs.

Finished Size: 29 ½ (35 ½, 41 ½, 47 ½)" bust circumference. Sweater shown measures 35 ½".

Yarn: Frangipani 5-Ply Guernsey Wool (100% wool; 1280 yd [1170 m]/500 g): crushed raspberry, 1 (1, 2, 2) cone(s). Available from guernseywool.co.uk or yarnbarn.com by mail order.

Needles: Body and sleeves—size 2 (3 mm): 16" and 24" circulars (cir). Facings and neckband—size 1 (2.5 mm) 16" and 24" circulars. Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions: Markers (m); smooth, contrasting waste yarn; stitch holders; tapestry needle.

Gauge: 27 sts and 40 rows = 4" average gauge in charted knit-and-purl texture patterns using larger needles, after washing and blocking.

Skill Level: Intermediate.

I'm really enjoying knitting this gansey.  It took a little while to get into the logic of the pattern repeats because a number of them are similar - only a stitch or two of difference.  But it's now my tv knitting, so it's not as complicated as it looks.  I'm making mine in a sturdy yarn because it will be a working sweater.  I want to make another one, changing some of the patterns; I'm making the second size, so there are patterns I don't get to use, so I'm going to replace some that I find tedious with ones from the larger sizes.  This second gansey will be in a softer wool, so I can wear it alone.
