Technique: Knitting

The knitted lace purse (complete with beaded cinching wrist strap and iridescent beads at the tips of the lace edging) is worked in the round from the bottom up to the lace edging at the top. Best of all, it's an heirloom that doesn't take a lifetime to make, but one that will be loved and passed on for years to come.

Finished Size: 14" circumference at upper edge and 5" deep.

Yarn: Ornaghi Filati Liza (100% mercerized cotton; 245 yd [225 m]/50 g): #001 white, 1 ball. Yarn distributed by Aurora Yarn.

Needles: Size 1 (2.25 mm): set of 5 double-pointed (dpn). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions: Tapestry needle; markers (m); size A (2 mm) steel crochet hook; 9 size 4 mm beads for purse edging and tie; 2 size 6 mm beads for cinching tie.

Gauge: 18 sts and 24 rows = 2" in purse patt.

Skill level: Intermediate.

I've run into the same problem. I can not download the purse pattern. I've never had this problem before. I hope that it can be fixed.

I had no problem downloading in Firefox--I used the save-and-open approach mlou365 mentioned--it makes sense, if I think you want to use a pattern, to save it to my computer and make sure it opens there.

Downloaded, it's very pretty! I have QUITE a few years before I have to even think about my daughter getting married (she's 11), but who says I can't get started on her Hope Chest :) (I have the pdf downloader add-on for firefox, so no dl problems here)

If there was a problem on KD's end, it seems to be fixed. I got it no problem with Firefox. I wonder why she chose cotton for an heirloom project... I would think linen or silk?

What a BEAUTIFUL BRIDE AND GROOM!!! Congratulations. :) Makes me happy just to see their picture. Also, I have a niece getting married in a month. Hopefully, I can duplicate your accomplishment (although not nearly as nicely, I'm afraid.) Thank you so much!

I think the computer ate my comment, so if this duplicates, I apologize in advance. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL BRIDE AND GROOM!!! It makes me really happy to see their picture. Also, I have a niece getting married in a little over a month. Hopefully, I can duplicate your accomplishment (although not nearly as well, I'm afraid). Thank you for the patter. And also? My 10 y/o is allowed to date when she turns 57. I don't have to worry about a dowry for her. :)

Congratulations to the bride & groom! May they have many happy years together. I have plenty of time to knit this....my only child's daughter turns 1 year old next week. Maybe by then I'll have learned to knit lace.

Anyone have any idea where to get the yarn specified? Besides Italy that is. I didn't have much luck with Google. Daughter getting married summer 2010 so I have plenty of time.

I signed in first, downloaded it to my "Patterns" file, then went to the file and opened it. I found this by (much) trial and error. I use Firefox.

I had no problem downloading the pattern. I am working on my second one right now. The first is for my son's bride to be, the wedding is this summer, and the second is to be a prom purse for my niece. I used #10 crochet cotton.

When beginning the leaf edging, on set uo row do you work all the way around first or begin at once to do each leaf? Thanks, Anne W

The only Ornaghi Filati Liza I can find is on the net and you must order 10 balls from Italy. I only need one ball. The wedding is in June. Can anyone suggest a yarn substitute? Thanks for the help.

I am using size 3 crochet thread and it's coming out more on less to size...beware of beads that you get though...the size I got in crystal have holes that are too small...but with enough effort, I am getting them on the bag...

In the instructions, what does the term CO stand for - cast on? Don't see any place that's explained. Thanks. Christine

I don't understand how to start adding the leaves. Do you break the yarn and start the knitted cast on or continue on a new needle? Help, I only have 2 more weeks until the wedding.

I have completed the bag and am now ready to add the leaves and can not figure out how to do this. Someone please help! I am knitting it for my son's fiancee. Thank you in advance.

I put all the stitches but the ones on the needle with the working thread on needle holders. I then used the working thread to make a slipstitch on an empty needle. Work the kniited cast on. Now follow the chart with the needle with cast on stitches and an empty needle. Pick up stitches from the purse at the begining of odd rows and at the end of even rows. Good luck.

No trouble downloading using Firefox. I am using South Maid #10 cotton thread. I didn't have DPNs in the size required so I am working on straight needles (purling on the back) and will have to seam up the side when complete. I wish there was some close-up pics of the leaves. I cannot seem to understand how to do the top/leaf part. Making this for my future niece-in-law for the wedding next month.

Want to thank Joshamom for her suggestions. So far I have finished three leaves, but have the strangest feeling they are wrong side out. In the wedding confusion I don't imagine anyone will look that closely.
joshanmom wrote

To JenniferB: When the leaves flop over they are right side up, but as you say no one will notice. I hope you are as happy with your bag as I am with mine. Glad I could help, it was giving me fits.

to joshanmom. Guess my leaves are going to be wrong side out. The bag is lovely and think my son's fiancee should frame it after the wedding. Feels like a real museaum piece.
