What is it?

I found these at the thrift store and thought I could use them to hold my cones while I worked the different threads together.  I am really curious what the real purpose of these tools is.  the center spindle is adjustable, so I thought maybe it was to wind yarn off a cone to make a hank for dyeing or maybe it is used to measure or make a precise hank???  does anyone know?

Thanks everyone for all the great responses and ideas.  Once I started searching for picture/plate holders, I was able to find many designs on the web...but none that looked like these.  Most of the ones on the web are smaller too.  These are about 30 inches in length and could fit a picture/canvas/platter up to 2 feet tall.  I think these are great because most platters that I have do not fit in my china hutch, but sadly my platters lip was too big and they did not fit very well...so I will keep using them as a project board holder.  Amazing what you can find at the thrift store.  These were $2.50 usd each, but I got them on 50% off day...so I only paid $2.50 for the pair.

Sorry I spelled a word wrong -  They are used to hold decorative plates and the spring adjusts to hold different size plates.

The are decorate plate holders.  The spring adjusts to the size of plate.
