Please help novice knitter:

Need 18" hat for Grandson.

Does anyone have a suggestion for gauge?  Please specify needle size, yarn, # of stitches.

(Thank you, "haneym"  for your post which let me know that this is possible.

Please clarify on the length and pattern instructions.

The pattern specifies the finished measurment is 20” around x 12” long

The pattern instructions are:

Knit until hat measures 12” or desired length.

Switch to Tapestry and knit for 8” or until Tapestry section is as long as the Slate section after the increases.

Do you mean 6" total length in the first color, then 6" total in the second color, to give the total 12" finished measurement?

The following pattern instruction has no * in the pattern line.  Should the asterisk be before the first instruction?

Rnd 1: K to 2 sts before marker, k2tog, slip marker; rep from *. 8 sts decreased.

Thank you.

I made this hat with size 6 needles and regular worsted yarn.  I did the 8 start up stitches and increased to 14 in between the 8 sections.  The hat came out warm and loose enough to wear sunglasses and not totally smash your hair.  I had so many people want one that I ended up with five.  The distance across one side in the middle was 21 in.  I also found this a great way to use up left over yarn.

I just downloaded Silverlining pattern. Re: The last two instruction rows - in row 1 instruction is to repeat from * - however there is NO beginning asterisk to show where the repeat starts. Of course final instruction is repeat both these rows. Need to know where to insert the asterisk in order to repeat. Thank you. Really cute hat!

Hi, I am going to knit to where I think ribbing would be tnen rib for 2 inches (maybe 1 1/2) then end off. Picking up the stitches in the very first row of ribbing and on what will become the inside of the hat continue from there to end this as per this pattern.

I am hoping to solve the "I don't like hats that turn up, I want ribbing and a lined hat" my man wants.  Also, it seems like the perfecy way to hide my less than perfect decreases inside the hat.

What do you think?

Oh and I love starting with circular needles... rheumatoid arthritis makes  double pointed needles hard enough!

You read my mind!  Thanks for giving us this pattern.  I made a version 35 years ago in worsted, and husband wants another one. But it is one of the few patterns I've lost.

It may be even better in skinny yarn; after the first one I'll try to convert.

Thanks!
