I have made this pattern many times, with many different yarns and effects. Adding some stitches to the outer edge, you can drop the stitches, then tie, a looped fringe edge. I've seen similar scarf patterns worked sideways, which calls for hundreds of stitches and lots of decreasing/increasing, and don't think they look nearly as nice as this pattern produces. With a lot less work and hassle. Because of the small number of stitches (scarf size) I use sock needles; this makes it much more portable, too.
