Finished Sizes To fit 16 (17, 18)" head circumference, 12. (13., 15)" around head at widest point. Bonnet shown measures 13." around at widest point.

Yarn Fiddlesticks Knitting Exquisite (50% mulberry silk, 50% Merino wool; 546 yd [500 m]/50 g): #02, pussywillow, 1 ball.

Needles Size 0 (2 mm): straights or circular (cir) at least 16"; and a second circular at least 16". Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions 4 (4, 6) markers (m); stitch holder; waste yarn for Provisional CO; safety pin; tapestry needle.

Gauge 38 sts and 54 rows = 4" in Chart A, B, C, E, F, or G after blocking; Chart D meas 1." wide.

Hi Nancy Jeanne!

The first row is not actually "for" 39 stitches. The part at the end of the row instructions which gives a stitch count is meant to indicate the number of stitches you should have on your needles once the row is FINISHED. Note that this is not necessarily going to be the same number of stitches that you STARTED the row with! 

For this particular pattern, the chart instructions ask you to make 4 decreases and 2 increases throughout the course of the first row. This translates into a net loss of 2 stitches over the whole row. Since 41 minus 2 is 39, you are meant to START the row with 41, but FINISH with 39. Make sense?

I'm confused. You cast on 41 stitches but the first row is for 39 stitches. What d you do with the other two stitches?
