This could be YOU in YOUR LYS!

We interrupt this broadcast of the Knitting Daily/Interweave Knits Winter 2007 Gallery Series to ask you this all-important question:

What would you buy if someone gave you $300 to spend at your local yarn shop?

This is not a theoretical question, my yarn-loving friends. This is For Real. Interweave Press is giving away gift certificates for a shopping spree at the yarn shop of your choice. Three of you lucky folks will win one of the following in a random drawing: first prize wins a $300 spree, second prize wins a $200 spree, and third prize wins a $100 spree.

(Go enter the contest. Then come on back to share a few good Yarn Fantasies with the rest of us.)

All right, now that you know it's a REAL question, let me repeat it so you can start thinking about what you would do with your winnings:

What would you buy if we gave you a $300 shopping spree at your favorite local yarn shop? How about a nice $200 spree? Or a $100 spree?

Be still my heart.

What would you choose?

Well, no. Not be still MY heart, because I, as Knitting Daily Ringleader, cannot, of course, enter the drawing, not even under a false name. (Think about this. Every local yarn shop owner from here to Estonia has my photo. There's no way I could sneak in with one of the Yarn Spree gift certificates and try to pass myself off as Someone Not Sandi. Especially not when I headed straight for the anything-silk-and-purple section. Right there, I'd be caught red-handed. Or rather, purple-handed...)

But for the rest of you: Be still your hearts. Imagine it. A gift certificate for $300 is in your hand, and the entire yarn shop is your oyster.

A girl can dream, though. Even though I can't enter the drawing, I can live vicariously through all of you. Tell me what your shopping spree would be like, and why your local yarn shop is the best one there is.

Next week: The Ivy League Vest Gallery, and more!

Sandi Wiseheart is the editor of Knitting Daily.

What's on Sandi's needles? Six inches of the Gathered Pullover; a pair of socks on two circulars with partial heel flaps, and six inches of the hood of my husband's cabled hoodie.

ooh! a Shopping Spree! I know exactly what I would buy. Cashmere. I have always wanted to crochet myself a cashmere cardigan, but have never gotten around to it b/c its so expensive.

With my winnings it would go toward a spinning wheel. :) They sell cool yarn and fiber too...

I would buy Blue Sky Alpacas Suri Merino in pale pink and cranberry. I've had my eye on it for several months now and I pet it each time I visit my LYS then give it a gentle goodbye pat as I walk out the door. It's like a cloud and I can just imagine how wonderfully delicious a sweater would be out of it. Sadly it is a little beyond my price range to buy that much of it. And I would finish my Addi Turbos collection because they are my absolute favorite needles. And if there was anything left, I would buy those wonderful new Harmony Stitch Guides you keep teasing us with! As for my LYS, I frequent Article Pract in Oakland, CA. It is an amazing store in a cute little section of Oakland. All of the ladies that work there are tremendously helpful and remember my name and the projects I have worked on! Kudos to them I say. :) I always feel welcome and free to browse for hours and ask the opinions of the store denizens. And I love geeking about knitting, isn't that what LYS's are for?

Malabrigo.

Or anything cashmere.

Or Kidsilk Haze, enough to make a luscious light gorgeous twinset.

Or more Tilli Tomas silk.

Or or or...!

But I can't win - no one in Canada can. :-(

My spree would have to be on-line. Knitting is not very popular in South Africa (i'm working on changing that though, Ive enabled one new knitter) and there are a variety of yarns that I've read about that I'm itching to try: STR, Lorna's Laces, Trekking, Noro, all not available here, and with the rand => dollar exchange rate out of reach.

Pick me, pick me!! Please pick me! I'm not usually reduced to begging, but dollars in an on-line yarn store...oh my...

If I won I would probably think I had died and gone to heaven!!! I would purchase some really neat yarn (non-wool, probably Berroco Comfort) to make my sister a Rambling Rows sweater/jacket. There is a new great niece/nephew coming in July, and probably a special yarn for myself. I would not have a problem spending that much money on yarn!!!

I am so overwhelmed by this possibility that I don't know what to say. I would really like to try new yarns, so I would have to finger everything in the store, find the most exciting and unusual yarns and then get enough of them to make the perfect (fill in the blank) here. But oh the agony! it would be so hard to find the perfect pattern for that perfect yarn!!

I would buy enough handpainted Alpacas with a Twist (Big Baby) from Sophie's to make scarves for all my old college girlfriends for our 10-year reunion. Alas, I can't win either (Interweave staff ;)

Oh, wow! What would I buy? I think I would have to go for something I don't usually do - like Buffalo Gold or some of the lovely Cashmere yarns that are out there... and after that, some pattern books that I have been looking at (the Harmony Guides and Barbara Walker Treasuries come to mind). Or, maybe I'd put it toward the little Louet Victoria spinning wheel that has been begging to come home with me (though I have 4 wheels already :-). I think there would have to be a few Addi Lace needles in my selection, as well as some of the incredible hand-dyed yarns that she carries... Oh, the possibilities!!! What a fun dream to dream!

Hoo boy. Where to begin? Blue Sky Alpaca has yarns that make my heart stop beating but Noro. Oh Noro. How I want to make a Lizard Ridge Blanket from thee. Yup. That's what I'd do. Wrap myself in a beautiful blanket made out of Silk Garden.

Hmm. I would have fun in the sock yarn. And with sweater-type yarn. And in the fiber! And probably a book or three. Sadly, I haven't been to my favorite LYS in.. six months? because my budget is so extremely limited, so I can't specify what yarn I would buy.

I'm actually not very fond of my geographicaly closest LYS; it doesn't have a lot the things I look for, and I don't find its atmosphere very welcoming. Happily, only a little further off is The Rose and Ram in Independence, OR, which is a beautiful little shop, very warm and welcoming, and full of things I want to take home with me. I wish the budget allowed me to go there more often!

If I had a gift cert. to spend at my LYS, I'd have a ball. First, Buy several of the yarns I've recently seen & really want to make some gifts for Christmas. I'd purchase a few knit-related books that have recently come out to add to my wonderful collection. Finally, I'd take a class in knitting a lacy shawl. Life would certainly be good!

I'm just thinking of the agony my kids would have to endure. How long would it take me to make a decision like that? It's never a quick trip to the yarn store anyway. I don't tell them when we are going to go anymore. Oh well, they'll get over it. The ice cream bribe usually keeps the moans to a minimum.

I'd buy luxurious wooden (maybe ebony?) needles, to help begin to replace my large and ancient collection of inherited Boye Aluminum ones. Then I'd buy some delicious soft luxury sweater yarn in an eggplant color. I have a ton of patterns already, so I ought not to be tempted there - but I just might have to review the pattern books to make sure I haven't missed anything. "Aberlady" is on my list, but not suited for soft luxury yarn, so I might need to purchase a pattern book after all! What a wonderful fantasy -

Tilli Tomas silk. Lots and lots of silk. Ooh and Blue Sky Alpaca cotton, two of my best friends are pregnant and I need good cotton for baby clothes. Plus lots of yummy Noro and ArtYarns, I just love their colorways. So gorgeous. Since I rarely if ever get to shop for good yarn, I usually only buy one skein of any particular yarn, so I would spend the $300 getting enough of ONE yarn to actually make something! What a great contest.

Wow!300 bucks! I'd purchase the yarn & tools to knit that cute Flirty Skirty & one of those sweaters in the Interweave Knits magazine along with private lessons. I'd also throw in the yarn, tools, & lessons for the Seduction Socks by Ann Budd. The lessons are important to me. I want to improve fast.

If I won I'd have to buy sock yarn, and merino yarn, and some of that wonderful from a little valley in Montana. Three hundred dollars at one time! What a dream!

My LYS has Lacey Lamb, Kidsilk Haze, and Louisa Harding silk/wool. I love finer knits and shawls, and wonderful but not blatant colors. With one third of the award, I would I would also buy Cascade 220 to knit vests for Afghans for Afghans kids ( @afghans for afghans.org). Anna

Did I mention I could really use some sock yarn? That wonderful Trekking ... bamboo, soy and yarn with aloe ... did I mention Addi Turbos? I could use a spaceboard and some sock needles ...

Oops, I'm sorry, was I talking in my dream/sleep?

My favorite yarn shop is the Blackberry Ridge Woolen Mill. Not only do they have beautiful yarn and patterns, but they are also where I get fleeces processed into roving. I could spend the money there in a heartbeat. I've been wanting to get some solid black yarn and some space dyed yarn to do a log-cabin weave with...just for starters.

3. stock up on cashmere and Lantern Moon Ebony circs.

Ruth C. says she doesn't know many knitters in South Africa - I am so sorry to hear that since I did some serious knitting when I lived there (1989-93). I don't specifically recall any knitting shops but I bought wonderful handspun wool and cotton at craft sales and flea markets - mostly in Kwa-Zulu-Natal. I've since heard that polar fleece is big there which might explain this. Best of luck converting the next generation of knitters, Ruth.

Cheers,

Oh Wow! I don't know what I would buy. I would probably do what I always do in a yarn shop full of fabulous yarn...wander around indecisively wringing my hands. $300 may be too much for me to handle. I'm not used to spending that kinda cash on myself! Oh my. Oh my.(hands wringing)

Let's see, I could start with a ball or two of the Quiviut I saw last time I was in there. No way I could buy it otherwise! I'd have to browse a lot, there are way too many options ... fibers to feed my spinning wheel (like that gorgeous purple-and-silk roving)... cashmerino for the Brushed Lace Cardigan (because I have some already in a luscious burgundy, but need more to do an entire sweater) ... silk is good for us in the desert ... probably a few books ....

For $300 I would definitly get some lessons from my local yarn shop. The lessons sound wonderful, but they are so expensive! If there was anything left over, I would love to have some silk and alpaca to work with, and some wonderful merino my husband wanted for a sweater, but was way too expensive to make his x-large size cardigan. (We settled on cascade 220 as reasonable and certainly very nice, but much plainer.)

Does anyone else find that it is more difficult to spend a gift certificate than it is to use real money or *gasp* a credit card? Cash and cards lend a certain spontaneity to any shopping trip, but a certificate always makes me act responsibly. I want to get the best deals I can find and always end up near the sale rack to make the certificate go farther. I guess 100-300 dollars is enough that I'd just try to throw caution to the wind and buy something I would ordinarily not splurge on!

Malabrigo. And/or something for a sweater. Yarn for a sweater for the niece that I've been eying for months now. More DPN's (they disappear in odd numbers).

ooohhhhh......some kid silk haze (to make that special scarf I have been wanting),sock yarn always sock yarn, a nice soft wool to make my son & DIL matching sweaters, and some nice yarn to make chemo caps for children. I would buy enough good quality yarn in some sumptuous fiber with all the notions and a pattern or book of patterns to make myself a wonderful sweater. I'm not a small person, so to make a regular sweater in decent yarn, it's well over $100. If I won first prize, I would get enough stuff to make myself, my husband and my mother a sweater (they are both smaller than me).

My local store has such an array of yarns, I'd plan a project for each yarn I've always drooled over---my family would be well-dressed for sure!

I'd stock up on Blue Sky Alpaca and Mac & Me patterns (!), I'd pick up a dozen or more of the newer style stitch holders (the kind that can be opened from either end!).

Oh, and then I'd hit the book section and then I'd hit the...what? You mean I'm out of money already?

(Unfortunately, my LYS doesn't have a whole lot to offer new spinners, which is what I'll be when my new wheel arrives next week!!)

Oooh, I would head directly to Woolen Treasures...no, no. First I would plan...this might take weeks....so I would know exactly what project I was buying for after I got the Rowan yarn to make the patchwork scarf and the Addi Turbo needles I so love. I usually make only small projects because I like the gratification that comes when a project is finished and also because I can't bring myself to spend the money to make a larger project. Oh, I can dream of 12 skeins of something soft and wonderful to make a cozy sweater. What a wonderful contest. Thanks, Sandi.

The hardest part of this contest was choosing which yarn store I would go to. $300 would go a long way toward a spinning wheel. Or do I go over to Artfibers in the city (SF) and splurge on their most luxious hand-dyed silk? Or do I just buy all the malabrigo I can carry? Must the spree be used at the store indicated?
